Our artists: A little background info

Weekender 2018

Unfamiliar with some of our newly added artists? Check out some background info on them below.

Modeselektor’s inarguable grooves seem to emanate from every conceivable musical genre, creating a controlled chaos whose sonic expression elevates the eyebrows and heartbeats of critics and dance floors around the world. Thrust upon the unique cultural landscape of the liberated city after the fall of the Berlin wall, the two former East Berliners found themselves in the ultmate urban jungle, deep in the realm of the absurd. They channeled this energy into their productions, creating dense, texured and rich sonic beats. We can’t wait for Modeselektor’s boundariless WAE set that will take us on a primal journey of epic proportions. Check out their music here.

Rene, Milan and Micha have known each other since their youth, first exposed to jungle music as teens in the mid-90s. The group started to produce music as Black Sun Empire (a reference to Star Wars) in 1997 and released their debut 12” single, “Voltage/Skin Deep,” in 1999. The dubstep trio have come a long way since producing their first track in their hometown of Utrecht. Since their inception, the group have released five full-length albums and have operated three independent record labels. Prepare to be abducted by the all encompassing beats of Black Sun Empire in Velder Woods.

The Berlin producer, Paul Kalkbrenner, returns to WE ARE ELECTRIC to change the Mainstage into a steaming techno Valhalla. With his deep, minimalistic sound, he is seen as one of the most innovative electronic artists in the underground scene, as well as one of the biggest names in techno who produced one of the top 10 most popular techno tracks in the history of dance music: Sky and Sand (listen here).

Oliver Heldens was only seventeen years old when he was signed to powerhouse label, Spinnin’ Records. Two years later, he released his first big hit ‘Gecko,’ and not long after, the popular track, ‘Koala’. After spectacular shows at festivals such as Tomorrowland, Glastonbury, Coachella and a sold-out AFAS Live last year, it’s We Are Electric’s turn to welcome the Dutch superstar in 2018. Explore his music here.

Belgian drum & bass artist, Netsky, conquered the international scene with his remixes for artists like Jessie J, Miike Snow and Swedish House Mafia. Since then, he has released three full albums of his own and is booked for his spectacular shows around the world. Not unfamiliar to the We Are Electric crowd, we are very excited to welcome him back to the fourth Weekender of #WAE!
